I'm also setting up reminders for when I can first apply for different parts of my family's benefits, like the health club benefit or vision (since I just finished applying for this stuff in December, last minute, this year.) I think automating bills is key. And, for me, automating my savings has been an even bigger boon. Within 24 hours of every paycheck all the necessary bills are paid and deposits are made to my savings accounts. This way, the temptations of the mall are much easier to evade.
